Chesed is part of Jewish tradition and Halacha and is integral to the development of a well-rounded person. She'arim provides a full range of chesed opportunities, including organized school events, creation of personalized chesed agendas, and integration within the broader community.
From packing food packages for the poor to visiting orphanages to creating activities for children with ill siblings, our students are active participants in contributing to Israeli society. As an institution, She'arim brings our students to 10 different chesed organizations to expose the students to the many ways in which Jews help other Jews. Once they have ladled out food at a soup kitchen or made a connection with a child, our students often continue to volunteer on a regular basis.
Any student interested in an individual chesed project during her stay is placed in an appropriate setting. Often students are able to leverage their professional skills in a volunteer capacity. For example, one student volunteered as a physical therapist at a hospital, while another became a big sister to a disadvantaged child. Yet another student was active in Shomera, a local environmental group. Lectures about genetic testing, cancer screening, and other health issues were organized for seminary students and the wider English speaking community by a student with a background in public health.
Some of our students choose to volunteer their time with families in the community, helping them make Shabbos and assisting with household tasks. The families get much-needed helping hands, and the students get an invaluable opportunity to learn how to build a Jewish home.
